Feisbuko grupėje, vienas žmogus pasivadinęs Shan Saab parašė šį pranešimą, anglų kalba. Tai kas nesupranta, teks išsiverst, bet labai teisingi pastebėjimai, labai.

Many have often asked why I DIY the Saabs and other cars so much. My usual answer "if it wasn't for the heavy physical DIY'ing and mentally challenging problem solving, I'd be dead by now...".
The fact is I don't DIY on all the Saabs or my other cars, but only the models that I like. Most of the maintenance on the Protons, are sent to mechanics, as the self satisfaction on working on them is low. When I had a Saab 9-5, it was nearly zero DIY'ing. On my Saab 9000, I only fix stuff when it's broken, or minor routine maintenance.
The Saab 900 on the other hand is different to the rest. I'd anytime pick up a spanner and work on them. The engineering behind the car is so well thought off, and the incredible build quality that went into it. Whenever a part is dismantled and put back, the sense of awe to the engineers who designed this model, and the feeling of thankfulness to them for considering that enthusiasts may one day maintain these cars themselves, therefore all the components have to be accessible with a couple of basic tools. The 900 may be ok, but I could always find something to DIY on them... even just opening the bonnet and wiping the dust off the incredibly sexy looking 16v cam covers.
I work on my Saab 96's too, as I started doing engine overhauls and gearbox repairs on this model when I was a kid in school. So it's more of a sentimental model, although some work is more difficult on the 96 compared to the 900, and the parts scarcity of the 96. But it always amazes me how the 96 evolved to the 99, then to the 900. There are parts from the 96 that were carried on into the 900.
When I graduated and started working, Dad let me use his 96 V4 as my daily driver. I did lots of solo drives and drove it pretty quickly all over the country with that car, thinking I was safe in cars driven by Erik Carlsson or Stig Blomqvist. I remember doing a drive with Mum and younger brother as passenger from Klang to Paka (Terengganu) in 5 hours 45 minutes in that 96 V4. I've driven Dad's 96 2-stroke on that same route, solo drive in 6+ hours. These were on the old trunk roads before the highways were built.
Now aged into the mid fifties, the amount of DIY'ing has slowed down, as the muscles tend to ache more, or injuries happen more easily. So when working on the cars, I tend to take more time, relax and just enjoy the work without time pressure. The satisfaction of taking an engine out of the Saab, fixing it and putting it back into the car, at home, in the front porch, is a treasure of experiences, with a long lasting overwhelming feeling. The logical thinking of taking something apart and reassembling it back together keeps the brain constantly active before the job starts (in planning stages) and execution. The aft is cold beers to mask the body aches.
And being a low profile Saab owner and DIY'er, close Saab friends (you know who you are) have helped a lot to keep the passion alive and parts supply. Not one day passes by without Saab talk or a light banter.
Words alone can't do justice to this unusual hobby, some things in life can only be understood by experiencing. I'm well aware that this hobby won't last too long more into the future as I see more and more EV's on the road. One day, fossil fuel itself will be a scarcity and all the Saabs would be just display items. But until then, I'm thankful to be given the chance to experience "Saab" during this lifetime, for as long as I live.
ps. I take FB and whatsapp groups as a form of humour & entertainment only, so don't believe everything I say (or don't say)
